Chapter 1: The Ultimate First-Time Visitor Guide to Victoria Falls

Everything you need to know before planning your trip to Zimbabwe’s most spectacular destination. Published by Outbound Holidays – Victoria Falls Local Travel Specialists.

Welcome to Victoria Falls

Planning your first trip to Victoria Falls is exciting—but it can also feel overwhelming. Questions quickly start to pile up: When is the best time to visit? How many days should I stay? Which activities are actually worth it? How much should I budget? Is it safe? Should I stay on the Zimbabwe or Zambia side?

If you’ve been searching online, you’ve probably found dozens of websites giving conflicting advice. Some are outdated. Others are written by people who have only visited once. Many simply list attractions without helping you decide what will actually suit your holiday.

📍 Local Insight: That’s where we do things differently

At Outbound Holidays, we’re based in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. We spend every day helping travellers from around the world plan memorable holidays here. We know which experiences are worth your time, where to stay based on your travel style, and the little local details that can make all the difference.

This guide brings together everything we’ve learned into one practical resource to help you plan your visit with confidence. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, bringing the family, celebrating a honeymoon, or chasing your next adventure, this guide will help you make informed decisions before you arrive.

Why Visit Victoria Falls?

Victoria Falls is much more than a waterfall. It’s one of Africa’s most complete travel destinations. Where else can you spend the morning walking through a rainforest beside one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, enjoy lunch overlooking the Batoka Gorge, cruise along the Zambezi River at sunset while watching elephants drink from the riverbank, and finish your evening with traditional Zimbabwean cuisine and live drumming?

That’s what makes Victoria Falls so special. Nature, wildlife, adventure, luxury, culture, and relaxation all come together in one destination.

The waterfall itself—known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning The Smoke That Thunders—is the heart of the experience. During peak water season, more than 500 million litres of water plunge over the edge every minute, creating towering clouds of mist that can be seen from kilometres away.

  • Guided rainforest walks through Victoria Falls National Park
  • Scenic flight of angels helicopter flights over the Batoka Gorge
  • Sunset cruises along the upper Zambezi River
  • Big Five game drives in Zambezi & Victoria Falls Private Game Reserves
  • Chobe National Park full-day safaris in Botswana
  • White-water rafting through the Batoka Gorge rapids
  • Rhino tracking safaris on foot
  • Luxury riverside dining & gorge lookout cafés
  • Cultural village visits and The Boma dinner & drum show

Is Victoria Falls Worth Visiting?

In our opinion, absolutely. But perhaps not for the reasons you might expect. Many destinations are built around one attraction. Once you’ve seen it, there isn’t much else to do. Victoria Falls is different. The waterfall is the centrepiece, but most visitors are surprised by how much there is to experience beyond it.

⭐ Outbound Recommendation: Stay at Least Three Nights

Many travellers arrive expecting to spend one or two days here and later wish they had planned a longer stay. We usually recommend staying at least three nights if your schedule allows. It gives you enough time to experience the Falls without rushing and enjoy several of the region’s highlights.

Your Victoria Falls Questions, Answered

Clear answers to the questions travellers ask us most often before visiting Victoria Falls.

Absolutely. Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and one of Africa’s most complete destinations. Beyond the waterfall itself, visitors enjoy wildlife safaris, sunset cruises, helicopter flights, adventure activities, and authentic Zimbabwean hospitality.
For most visitors, we recommend 3 to 4 nights. This gives you enough time to experience the Falls, enjoy a sunset cruise, take part in a safari or adventure activity, and still have time to relax without feeling rushed.
